Notification to Captain (NOTOC)

Notification to Captain (NOTOC)

Description

The NOtification TO Captain (NOTOC) is a form that informs the pilot of dangerous goods being transported on an aircraft. It is the sole regulatory source of information provided to the flight crew as to the nature, location and quantity of the Dangerous Goods (DG) carried as cargo. It also formally confirms that the Dangerous Goods Regulations have been complied with in full.

Contents

The NOTOC must include the following information:

  • The Air Waybill number (when issued)
  • The proper shipping name and UN or ID number
  • The class or division and any subsidiary hazard
  • For non-radioactive packages, the number of packages, the net quantity or gross weight (including the unit of measurement), if required on the Shipper's Declaration and the exact loading location
  • For radioactive material: the number of packages, their category, their transport index, if applicable, and their exact loading location
  • Whether the package is restricted to cargo aircraft only
  • The airport at which the package is to be unloaded
  • An indication that the dangerous goods are being carried under State exemption, if applicable

Process varies from one operator to the next. The NOTOC is usually completed by the cargo department; however, the loading position is often completed by the load planner or inserted by the ramp agent based on information from the load planner.

The information provided to the pilot-in-command (aircraft captain) must have a signed confirmation from the personnel responsible for loading the dangerous goods stating that there was no evidence of damage or leakage.

The pilot-in-command must provide indication that he or she has receivedthis information, and the NOTOC must be readily available during flight. In addition, to the pilot-in-command's copy, another copy of the form must be retained on the ground. This copy must be accessible to the flight operations team.

If there is a crew change enroute, the new pilot-in-command must be provided with the NOTOC showing all dangerous goods that remain onboard.
