An item whose failure or malfunction could have one or more of the following effects or characteristics:

• affect safety on the ground or in flight
• be undetectable during operations
• have significant operational economic impact
• have significant non-operational economic impact.

It is sometimes referred to as a Safety Significant Item (SSI)
