A gyrodyne is a type of aircraft with a rotor like system used to provide vertical thrust for takeoff and landing and also one or more conventional propellers used to provide forward thrust during horizontal flight. During horizontal flight lift is provided by a combination of the rotor, like an autogyro, as well as conventional aircraft type wings. The term compound helicopter is often used to describe this type of design.
