B773 / B773, Dubai, UAE, 2022

Summary

On 9 January 2022, a Boeing 777-300 commenced takeoff without clearance in good night visibility as another Boeing 777-300 was crossing the same runway not far from the midpoint as cleared. Only after a repeated stop call did the first aircraft initiate a rejected takeoff. The first aircraft still stopped well before reaching the position where the other aircraft was crossing. The misperceived lineup clearance was accompanied by the crew not adequately monitoring the radio frequency, regarding both their own clearance and that given to crossing traffic ahead.

Description

On 9 January 2022, a Boeing 777-300 (A6-EQA) operated by Emirates on a scheduled passenger flight from Dubai to Hyderabad as EK524 was cleared to line up on runway 30R. At the same time, another Boeing 777-300 (A6-EBY) also operated by Emirates and on a scheduled passenger flight from Dubai to Bengaluru as EK568 was cleared to cross near the midpoint of the same runway in night visual conditions (VMC). The aircraft cleared to line up then began its takeoff roll from the full length of the runway without clearance, and the controller did not notice that this takeoff was occurring until the aircraft reached high speed. The first instruction to stop was ignored but when repeated it was actioned such that the aircraft still stopped well before the crossing point. Both flights subsequently departed, operated by their existing flight crews.
